Iqaluit professional doula services for your pregnancy, birth & parenting journey.

I am Megan,  wife and mother of two very busy kids,  and a Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula.

Being raised in Nunavut as well as having my children here, I see the importance of having these services offered to Nunavummiut. I am pleased to be able to offer this meaningful support in Iqaluit.

My main goal is to empower women and their partners to make informed decisions throughout the birth process. Pregnancy can be very exciting, but also very overwhelming. An extra support person can make a huge difference in entering parenthood, whether with your first or fifth child.

We do not take the place of a doctor, nurse, midwife or partner. What we do is add the extra assistance and help the partners get more involved.

My journey to become a doula began after a difficult birth and postpartum experience with my first child. Through my struggles, I learned the obstacles I faced weren't unique. As my passion grew, I wanted to share my knowledge with expectant mothers and help them navigate through the overwhelming times before, during and after childbirth.

I'm excited to meet expectant couples and work with them to create a comfortable and supportive birth environment.

WHAT IS A DOULA?

A doula is someone who provides support and care to a person during childbirth and the postpartum period. People have complex needs during childbirth and in addition to the safety, love and companionship provided by their partners, labouring people need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. A doula can aid in all of these aspects.

In collaboration with Rhoda Ungalaq of Innuuivut Consulting we have created a Nunavut made workshop that combines the skills of a Birth & Postpartum Doula with a Traditional midwife.

BREASTFEEDING EDUCATION

My packages will be offering services to support breastfeeding guidance and education. Latching, positions, benefits, basic problem solving, when to refer to a lactation consultant.

Offering support to anyone who wants to breastfeed. It can be simple for some and more difficult for others. The health benefits in breastfeeding are for both the mother and baby. Breastmilk protects against many childhood illnesses as well as having long term benefits. The World Health Organization has recommended that infants be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months to gain optimal growth, development and health. When ready, complimenting the breastmilk with healthy food and if desired, continuing to breastfeeding for up to two years or more.

Everyone has different goals and requests when it comes to breastfeeding. Some might have shorter goals or longer. My education is for anyone who wants to try breastfeeding for whatever length they wish. I work with the individuals to meet the personalized goals and arm you with evidence based resources.

DOULA SERVICES

I will make personalized packages for a la cart: prenatal care, postnatal care, private classes, and partner support 101.

TESTIMONIALS

Rola

Corinne

There’s a whole other side to pregnancy that we don’t think about, and that is the emotional experience we endure throughout the nine to ten months, the delivery,

and post delivery. She helped sort out how I was breastfeeding, showing different ways to hold the baby, how to pile pillows for both the baby and I to be comfortable, and introducing skin to skin. Just those changes allowed me to continue breastfeeding and to enjoy it more.

She was able to listen to what I was going through emotionally and physically. She guided me though my days and help me get all the necessary things the baby and I needed. Thanks to Megan Levy Mason for being there for me during my first experience from belly bump to baby.

My involvement with Megan as our doula for our first born has been the most enriching, educational, and empowering experience of my life. Our time spent with Megan before birth was engaging and informative. She was warm and affectionate from the moment we met her. Her energy and passion she put toward her doula work was inspiring and motivating.

Megan passes no judgment on the way you wish to labour, feed etc. She is there to support you and your partner and to provide you with the material necessary to make your own personal, informed decisions as they arise.

The prenatal information was very informative. Megan could answer all our questions. She is very passionate about her work and is very knowledgeable. During the labour she was very supportive and took charge. She went above and beyond as well as taking pictures and documenting my husbands first skin to skin.

Megan shows tremendous passion towards the care of expectant mothers and their babies to be. She was the bridge that connected my partner and I during labour. My partner was made more aware of his role because of Megan.

She was available anytime I had concerns about prenatal care, labour, and breastfeeding. She helped with the birth of my second son in 2015 and the balance between her personality and professionalism was outstanding. I would recommend her to other expecting mothers in the future!

Megan provided doula services when I had my son January 30, 2016. She provided a lot of personal support while I was on pain management during labour. I felt assured that she could follow up with the nurses and doctor when I was not able to.
